Barite receives its name from the Greek word "barys" which means "heavy." This name is in response to barite's high specific gravity of 4.5, which is exceptional for a nonmetallic mineral. Barite is known for the strength of its grounding capabilities; having quite an effect on one's psyche and help with many psychological matters. It is said to have the ability to clear the psychological obstacles in one's path and assist in strengthening resolve, by releasing trapped emotions.
